I’m a runner and Zen Buddhist. I’ve been running for over 30 years, and practicing Zen for eight. This is my running and Zen practice journal. A few of my short essays on the crossroads of Zen and running have also appeared in Tricycle, Shambhala Sunspace, and Buddhist Geeks.
I find many parallels between running and Zen. Probably one of the clearest is that, in both practices, I have a lot to (un)learn.
The title “Run With Mu” came from something my Zen teacher once told me. I was struggling with the koan Mu while trying to reconcile my Zen practice with my running. I asked him, “Can I practice with Mu while I run?”
“Yes, by all means,” he said. “Run with Mu.”
